     RTD is saying that the strong economy hurts their recruiting.  The whole truth is that they ARE hiring but horrendous working conditions chase those new hires away.  As long as RTD forces bus and train operators to work on their days off (with just one or two days’ notice at Light Rail), RTD will not retain employees.  Operators who must be gone from home for up to 14 hours because of a split shift that may pay only 8 hours may well decide to leave.  As long as operators’ workstations lack ergonomic design, many will tire of the physical strain and leave.  As long as operators can work all day without any real break (often not even having time to use the bathroom), many will leave. Bus and Train Operators deserve better than this!  WE are better than this.

       Bus and Train Operators have to deal with people hounding them, making unreasonable demands and even threatening them…and then they leave the garage to go serve the public!  Being a bus operator is hard enough as it is but when your employer doesn’t have your back, it is dehumanizing.  In a job shown to be more stressful than others, causing much higher rate of debilitating back pain than others, and often being subject to threats of violence, RTD should give operators the benefit of the doubt like they used to.  Bus and Train Operators deserve better than this!  WE are better than this.
